Nice post! On the one had the video achieves its purpose and is well done. On the other hand I was a bit bothered by the focus on young adults/children as a means of juxtaposing the different lives people live. I found it a bit unfair to target teenagers (an easy target in the West) and would like to see a similar video using grown adults instead. After all, those teenagers are being raised by someone and are receiving certain messages from their parent's generation. We should hold the torch/same level of scrutiny to adults.
Thanks for commenting.
Apparently the video has been a huge success with much debate following. I think that was probably the aim in terms of raising awareness.
You might be interested in this article from SMH.com.au which gives more background as to why they went with the teenage angle. I found it to be very informative.
It also highlights what many of us in the Health/IT field see as an emerging trend in web 2.0 technologies raising awareness of social and health issues.
This is one statement from the producer:
"This debate is very satisfying for Adam Valvasori, who runs Stir, World Vision's youth arm, which produced the video.
The response has been overwhelming," he says.
"We have known for a while that it is not good enough just to have your own website but that we had to have a presence on MySpace and YouTube and you must have a two-way communication to motivate people to act."
The format of YouTube has been very useful, he says, because when people are engaged they are often willing to watch for up to five minutes, which is enough time to convey a complex message.
In the video, instead of asking people to simply put their hands in the pocket, they are urged to do something real" wherever they are and the 40-hour famine is given as an inspiration.
